Self-drilling screws, also referred to as Tek screws, feature a tip that is shaped and functions similarly to a twist drill bit. The sharp point and cutting threads eliminate predrilling a pilot hole into the material. The screw cuts its threads and creates a hole in the material all in one action.

Position the screw straight in line with the hole and turn it in, one or two turns, by hand. This allows the screw to be left in the hole as you pick up your screwdriver or drill machine. Using firm short movements, screw the self-tapping screw in place using a Phillips or flat head screwdriver or drill bit.

Self-drilling Tek screw:

Tek screws, also called self-drilling screws, are self-tapping fasteners that have a drill bit end allowing them to be used for screwing materials such as wood and metal together without pre-drilling.

Screws as self drilling

Self-drillers are also commonly called ‘Tek’ screws, a proprietary brand name associated with their unique shape and function. Drill point sizes dictate drilling capacity. Common Tek point sizes are #2, #3, #4 and #5 (Series 500) – 2 and 3 most common, 4 and 5 for going through thicker metal.

Self-drilling screws have a point that acts as a drill bit and sharp cutting threads that tap holes at the time of installation. The self-drilling screws are used for a variety of screws for quick drilling into all kinds of materials, be it metal or wood.

Self drilling screws:

Here’s where the confusion comes from, a self tapping screw can also be self drilling. Basically a self drilling screw is a tapping screw that doesn’t need a pilot hole. They both technically tap their own threads, all screws do this to varying degrees. But, the self drilling screws skip a step in the process.

A Tek screw

Self-drilling screws are often called Tek screws, which is the name of the original brand. These fasteners have a drill bit-shaped tip and are standard when securing metal to metal. TEK type screws are self-drilling and self-tapping, meaning they have a point with a small carving piece and do not need pre-drilling.

Self drilling screws & metal:

One of the most popular types of screw for fixing metal is the self-drilling screw. Self-drilling screws do not need a pilot hole to cut through the metal and are good at fastening metal to metal or wood to metal.

Screw into Aluminium:

Fasteners for aluminum, such as regular screws and nails, don’t work since they are prone to loosening under these vibrations. On the other hand, self-tapping screws offer a considerably stronger bond because of their construction.
