U Channel:

The metal U-Channel is a continuous U-shaped metal channel that is widely used in metal rolling. Steel U-Channel adds rigidity and stability to steel structures, and its use significantly increases the load-bearing capacity.

Difference between U channel and C channel

Steel channels have been classified into “C” and “U” types depending on their outlook. Hence there are two standards to show the channel dimensions – UPE & UPN. UPE is for the C channel steel with parallel flanges while UPN is for the U channel steel with tapered flanges.

Size is a U-channel

U-Channel Steel Beams are available in a range of sizes with widths between 1.35”-3.15” (3.4-8 cm), depths from 3”-12” (7.6-30.5 cm), and thicknesses between. 12”-. 4” (3-10 mm). U-Channel Steel Beams are available in typical lengths between 4′-20′ (1.22-6.1 m)

UPN

UPN / UNP
European Normal Channels
UPN or UNP is the short form for standardized channel sections according to EN 10365 with tolerances according to EN 10279: 2000. UPN in stainless steel are used in all kind of industrial applications, machinery and equipment building.

Another name for the U channel.

U-Channel also goes by the name Parallel Flange Channel and tends to be more custom to each manufacturer and industry standard sizes are not as common aside from the European standard surrounding UPE Channel.

Metal used for U channel.

U Channel. The distinctive shape of U channels is achieved by forming two right angles on a roll formed flat piece of metal. U shaped metal channels, as with other forms of channels, come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes with round or flat bottoms and sides of a few inches up to several inches.

Measuring the Channel

Steel channels are commonly specified using the depth (in inches) and weight of the channel (in pounds per foot). For example, a “6 x 13” channel is approximately 6 inches in depth and weighs approximately 13 pounds per foot.

Calculate the weight of a U channel

The unit weight of an MS channel is calculated using the formula weight = volume density, with steel having a density of 7850 kg/m3. To determine the volume, multiply the web’s height by the flange’s width and the channel’s thickness.
