Why Cat 6 Has Replaced Cat 5e for Most New Installations

Cat 5e cable was the workhorse of office networking for years. It handled the 1 Gbps speeds that most office equipment runs at, it was inexpensive, and it was easy to terminate. Most network installations from 2005 to about 2015 used Cat 5e and worked fine.

Then a few things changed. IP CCTV cameras became standard equipment with the introduction of MoI mandated CCTV regulations across KSA. Many of these cameras need PoE (Power over Ethernet) to receive both power and data through a single cable. Office networking equipment started supporting 10 Gbps speeds. Smart building systems started running larger amounts of data through structured cabling.

For all of this, Cat 5e is on the edge of its capability. Cat 6 has more headroom. It supports 1 Gbps comfortably with margin to spare. It handles 10 Gbps over the shorter runs typical of building wiring. It performs better with PoE and PoE+ powered devices. And it future proofs the installation for whatever bandwidth requirements come next.

For most new installations in Saudi Arabia, Cat 6 is now the working standard. We stock it because that’s what installers actually need.

Why Solid Copper Cat 6 Cable Is Essential for Reliable Networking

This is where buyers get burned. Cheap “Cat 6” cable on the market is often copper clad aluminium (CCA), which is aluminium wire with a thin copper coating. Real Cat 6 cable is solid copper conductors throughout.

CCA cable looks identical to solid copper from the outside. It’s cheaper. And it works for a while. But CCA has higher resistance than solid copper, which means more voltage drop on PoE runs (cameras and equipment receive less power than they should), more heat generation under PoE load (creates fire risk on long runs), and shorter service life.

For PoE camera installations specifically, CCA cable is a real problem. It can deliver enough power to start the camera but not enough to run it under all conditions, leading to intermittent failures that are hard to diagnose. For commercial structured cabling that has to meet building standards, solid copper is required.

The Cat 6 cable we stock is clearly labelled as solid copper or CCA where applicable, so installers can choose with full information. For any PoE installation, CCTV deployment, or commercial structured cabling, solid copper is the right specification.

When and Where to Use Cat 6 Cable for Networking

How to Choose Between Indoor and Outdoor Cat 6 Cable

Standard Cat 6 has a PVC jacket designed for indoor use. The jacket is rated for typical indoor environmental conditions but degrades under UV exposure and moisture over time.

For outdoor runs (between buildings, exterior CCTV cameras, anywhere the cable is exposed to sun and weather), outdoor rated Cat 6 with UV resistant jacket is needed. We stock outdoor jacketed variants for these applications.

For runs inside conduit underground or in similar protected outdoor pathways, regular indoor cable can sometimes be used, but verify with the project specification before installing.

Q1. What’s the difference between Cat 5e and Cat 6?

Cat 6 has tighter pair twists, an internal separator between pairs, and supports up to 250 MHz bandwidth versus 100 MHz for Cat 5e. In practical terms, Cat 6 handles 10 Gbps over shorter runs and provides better PoE performance. For new installations, Cat 6 is the current standard.

Q2. Do I need Cat 6A instead of Cat 6?

Cat 6A supports full 10 Gbps over 100 metre runs versus Cat 6 at up to 55 metres for 10 Gbps. For most building wiring, Cat 6 is sufficient. For data centre cabling or specialised high speed runs, Cat 6A may be required.

Q3. Is solid copper really worth the extra cost over CCA?

For PoE installations and commercial structured cabling, yes. CCA cable has higher resistance which causes problems with PoE power delivery. Cheap CCA cable can also fail building inspection in commercial work. For non PoE residential use, CCA might work fine, but the price difference for solid copper is usually small.
