Solest 220 Polyol Ester (POE) Industrial Compressor Oil -18.9L
Solest 220 by CPI is a synthetic POE refrigeration oil in ISO VG 220, the heaviest of the Solest grades we stock. It is used where the compressor maker calls for a high viscosity, mostly in industrial screw compressors and refrigeration systems running at high loads and discharge temperatures. It suits HFC systems and works as an initial fill or for retrofits.
Key Features
- ISO VG 220 (1000 SUS), a thick oil film that stands up to heavy loads
- Stronger bearing protection thanks to higher film strength
- Fully synthetic, so it holds viscosity better than mineral oil as temperatures climb
- Higher flash and fire points than mineral oils
- Protects steel and aluminium surfaces against wear
- Used for OEM factory fills and retrofit work
When Do You Need a 220 Grade?
Heavy oil isn’t for every compressor. It is needed in large factory screw compressors, industrial refrigeration with high discharge temperatures, and any application where the OEM specifies ISO 220 by name. In those systems, a lighter oil thins out the film on the bearings and leaves the rotors under-protected.

Signs Your Compressor Oil Needs Changing
- Dark oil or a burnt smell at the sight glass
- Discharge temperature running higher than normal
- Oil analysis showing acid, moisture or metal particles
- After a compressor motor burnout, or whenever the system has been opened for repair
Storing the Can in Saudi Conditions
- Keep it in the shade and out of direct sun, especially in site stores
- Reseal the lid tightly after every use, because POE pulls moisture from the air
- Don’t put oil from a can that has sat open for a long time into a new system
Applications
- Industrial screw compressors
- Industrial refrigeration in food and dairy plants
- Large cold and frozen storage facilities
- Chillers where the OEM specifies ISO 220
- Mineral-oil-to-POE retrofits

FAQs
Q1. Is Solest 220 better than 170 because it’s heavier?
No. The best grade is the one your compressor maker specifies. Oil heavier than required can hurt oil return and increase energy use.
Q2. Where is Solest 220 usually used?
In industrial screw compressors and high-load, high-temperature applications where the OEM specifies a 220 viscosity.
Q3. Does it work with R134a?
Yes. Solest 220 is designed for HFC refrigerant systems.
Q4. How can I tell the oil has broken down?
Check its colour and smell at the sight glass, and watch for rising discharge temperature. Oil analysis is the most reliable check.
Q5. How long does an opened can last?
It depends on storage because POE absorbs moisture once opened. Use it quickly and keep it tightly sealed.
