Two Different Kinds of Actuator
"Chiller actuator" covers two component classes that share a name and nothing else. Ordering across them is the most common error in this category.

How to Identify the Right Actuator
- Isolate power to the control panel and apply lockout/tagout.
- Read the compressor nameplate, not only the chiller nameplate. Note the compressor code.
- Read the part number on the existing actuator if it's legible.
- Confirm whether the machine has a VGD — if so, you need a second kit.
- Note the chiller model designation including the modification letter where applicable.
- Photograph the actuator, its wiring, the compressor nameplate and the chiller nameplate.
- Send us the photos for written confirmation before you raise the order.
Symptoms of a Failing Actuator
- Vanes stuck at one position while the controller commands movement
- Capacity that won't modulate the chiller runs at fixed output regardless of load
- Hunting vanes oscillating around a position instead of settling
- Sluggish response to load changes, worsening over time
- Position feedback disagreeing with commanded position
- Collapsed delta T with no hydraulic cause and rising energy consumption
- Audible grinding or stalling from the actuator
Rule out first: the control signal reaching the actuator, the wiring harness and its terminations, mechanical binding in the vane linkage, and supply voltage. A seized linkage will destroy a brand-new actuator within weeks.

Q1. What does PRV mean on a chiller actuator?
PRV stands for Pre Rotation Vanes. It is a capacity control component used on centrifugal chillers. The actuator drives the vanes that regulate refrigerant gas entering the impeller. Despite some incorrect parts listings, PRV in this application does not mean pressure relief valve.
Q2. Do I need one actuator kit or two?
You need one kit if your compressor has PRV only. If it also has a Variable Geometry Diffuser (VGD), a separate actuator kit is required for the VGD. Confirm your compressor configuration before ordering to ensure you receive all the required components.
Q3. How do I know which kit fits my chiller?
The compressor code determines the correct actuator kit, not the chiller model alone. Kits for different compressor codes can have part numbers that differ by only one digit. Send us a photo of your compressor nameplate, and we'll confirm the correct kit before you order.
Q4. What's included in a PRV actuator kit?
A genuine PRV actuator kit includes the motor actuator, wiring harness, and MOV varistors. Replacing the harness at the same time can help avoid repeat failures when the existing harness has aged or deteriorated.
Q5. When should actuators be replaced proactively?
The manufacturer recommends inspecting and replacing the actuators as necessary every 40,880 operating hours or 7 years, whichever comes first.
