Twin Tub Washing Machine: How It Works, Which Size to Buy and How to Keep It Running
A twin tub washing machine, also called a semi-automatic washer, has two drums side by side. One washes, one spins. You move the clothes between them by hand. It costs less than a fully automatic machine, washes fast and is simple to repair. That is why it is still a common choice in Saudi homes, especially for large families and heavy laundry such as thobes, blankets and work clothes.
This guide explains how a twin tub works, what the numbers on the spec sheet really mean, how to choose the right size for a Saudi home, and which parts wear out first. That last part is where we spend our days at Cool.

What is a Twin Tub Washing Machine ?
A twin tub has a wash tub with a pulsator (a ridged disc at the bottom that churns the water) and a separate spin basket that wrings water out at high speed. Each side has its own motor and its own timer, so you can spin one load while the next one washes.
There is no programme that fills, washes, rinses and spins on its own. You control each stage, so a twin tub uses only the water and time you choose. In return, you have to stay near it while it runs.
How a Twin Tub Works, Step by Step
1. Fill the wash tub through the inlet hose (or a bucket) to the water level that matches your load.
2. Add detergent, let it dissolve, then add the clothes.
3. Choose the wash mode (gentle, normal or strong) and set the wash timer, usually up to 15 minutes.
4. Turn the drain selector to empty the wash tub. Most twin tubs drain by gravity, so the hose must sit lower than the machine.
5. Refill and rinse. Most loads need one or two rinses.
6. Move the clothes to the spin basket, spread them evenly, fit the inner cover, close the lid and set the spin timer (usually up to 5 minutes).
7. Hang the clothes to finish drying. A spin dryer removes water but does not dry with heat.
Wash Capacity Vs Spin Capacity
The big number on the box is the wash capacity. The spin basket is smaller. Midea’s 14 kg model spins 8 kg, and Panasonic’s 13 kg model also spins 8 kg. If you fill the wash tub to the top, plan to spin in two batches. Overloading the spin basket is the most common cause of shaking, noise and early wear on the spin side.
Twin Tub Specs: What the Numbers Mean
| Spec | Midea MT100W140 | Panasonic NA-W13XG2 | What it tells you |
| Wash / spin capacity | 14 kg / 8 kg | 13 kg / 8 kg | Spin in batches when the wash tub is full |
| Rated power (wash / spin) | 480 W / 200 W | 500 W / 210 W | Two motors. Peak draw is when both run. |
| Timers (wash / spin) | 15 / 5 | 15 min (+20 min soak) / 5 min | Short, user-controlled cycles |
| Spin speed | about 1,250 rpm | 1,490 rpm | Higher = drier clothes, harder on delicates |
| Water per fill | 42–92 L (4 levels) | 105 L (standard) | Pick the level and reuse wash water to save |
| Power supply | 220–240 V, 50 Hz | 230 V, 60 Hz | Saudi mains is 230 V / 60 Hz |

Twin Tub vs Automatic Washing Machine
| Twin tub (semi-automatic) | Fully automatic (top or front load) | |
| Price | Lower for the same capacity | Higher |
| Your time | You stay near it and move clothes | Load, press start, walk away |
| Water | You set the level and can reuse wash water | Programme decides |
| Hot water | Usually none (cold fill) | Many front loaders heat water |
| Speed | Fast wash and spin, can overlap | Longer full programmes |
| Repairs | Mechanical timers, belts, gearbox, easy to source | Electronic boards, sensors, costlier |
| Best for | Large families, heavy or very dirty loads, tight budgets | Busy households, delicate fabrics |
If you want to set it and leave, buy an automatic. If you want low cost, fast heavy-duty washing and cheap repairs, a twin tub still makes sense.
Which Capacity Do You Need?
| Your laundry | Suggested wash capacity | Watch out for |
| One or two people, daily clothes | 7–9 kg | Blankets won’t fit |
| Family of 4–6, thobes and school uniforms | 10–12 kg | Spin basket size; check it on the spec sheet |
| Large family, or blankets and bedding at home | 13–18 kg | Floor space and a drain point nearby |
This is a practical guideline, not a manufacturer rule. Size by your heaviest regular load, not by an average day.
Buying Checklist for Saudi Homes
• 60 Hz on the rating plate. Saudi mains is 230 V, 60 Hz, with Type G plugs. Some imported models are built for 50 Hz.
• SASO energy label. Look for the Saudi energy efficiency label on the machine or box. SASO’s washing-machine standard (SASO 2885) treats top-load and twin-tub machines as their own category, and a revised version adds a water-consumption class.
• Spin capacity and rpm, not only the wash capacity.
• Water inlet and level selector, so you can match water to the load.
• Drain type and height. Gravity drains need a floor drain lower than the machine.
• Rust-proof plastic body, especially in Jeddah, Dammam and other humid coastal cities.
• Lint filter in the wash tub.
• Warranty and parts. Common brands (Hitachi, Toshiba, LG, Midea and others) have timers, gearboxes and seals readily available. Ask about parts before you buy an unfamiliar brand.
• Space. The two 13–14 kg models above measure about 90–96 cm wide, 54–55 cm deep and 105 cm tall. Check the exact model.
Maintenance That Keeps a Twin Tub Running
After Every Wash
• Empty and rinse the lint filter.
• Drain the wash tub fully and leave both lids open to dry.
• Wipe water from the control panel and around the timer knobs.
Every Month
Run an empty wash with a drum cleaner or white vinegar to remove detergent build-up.
• Check the inlet and drain hoses for cracks and blockages.
• Look under the spin side for water marks. That is an early sign of a worn spin seal.
• Make sure the machine stands level, so the spin basket doesn’t knock.
Common Twin Tub Problems and The Part Behind Them
| Problem | Likely cause | Part to check |
| Wash tub doesn’t turn, motor hums | Belt, motor capacitor or gearbox | Washing machine gearbox |
| Wash doesn’t stop, or stops early | Wash timer | Washing machine timers |
| Spin tub doesn’t spin | Spin timer, lid safety switch, belt or brake | Spin timer ET007 (5 min) |
| Spin tub shakes or bangs | Uneven or overloaded basket, machine not level | No part. Redistribute the load and spin in two batches. |
| Water leaks under the machine while spinning | Spin seal or drain hose | Twin tub spin seal ARAH-GBHS-153 |
| Wash tub won’t drain, or drains while washing | Drain selector, drain valve or drain switch | Hitachi drain switch XK-2S |
| Grinding noise from the wash tub | Gearbox or pulsator wear | Hitachi twin tub gearbox |
| Burning smell | Motor stalled or overloaded | Switch off and unplug, then call a technician |
Always unplug the machine before opening any panel. Matching a timer means counting its wires and checking the mounting holes, so a photo of the old part saves a wrong order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is a twin tub the same as a semi-automatic washing machine?
Yes. Both names describe a machine with separate wash and spin tubs where you move the clothes and control each stage yourself.
Q2: Does a twin tub use less water than an automatic ?
It can, but only when you choose a lower water level and reuse the wash water. Water use per fill varies a lot. One 14 kg model ranges from 42 L to 92 L depending on the level selected.
Q3: How long does a twin tub wash take ?
The wash timer usually runs up to 15 minutes and the spin timer up to 5 minutes. Add one or two rinses, and a full load takes roughly 30–45 minutes, depending on rinses and spin batches.
Q4: Can I run the wash and spin tubs at the same time ?
Yes. Each tub has its own motor and timer, so you can spin one load while the next one washes.
Q5: Why does my twin tub spin only when I press the lid?
The spin lid has a safety switch that cuts the motor when the lid opens. If spinning only works while you press the lid, the switch or its actuator is worn or out of position.
