How to Use This Plier Correctly

The parallel grip section near the pivot handles round objects, flat stock, and sheet metal bending. The serrated teeth give grip without requiring high hand force. Use this section for gripping wire ends, bending sheet metal tabs, and holding conduit fittings in place while tightening.

The side cutter is for copper conductors, cable ties, and soft wire. Position the wire deep into the cutting notch near the pivot for maximum mechanical advantage. Cutting near the tip of the jaws requires more force and wears the cutting edge faster.

Do not use combination pliers to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts. Plier jaws are not flat and they will round off fastener corners immediately. That’s what the wrench set is for.

On insulated handle tools: inspect the insulation sleeve before working near energized equipment. Cracked, cut, or peeled insulation on the handle means the protection is compromised. Replace the tool rather than taping over damaged insulation electrical safety protection is not a repair item.

Plier Maintenance

Combination pliers need minimal maintenance but they do need some.

Keep the pivot joint clean and lightly oiled. A dry pivot accelerates wear on the joint hole and the pin. One drop of light machine oil on the pivot every few months keeps it moving smoothly and extends the life of the joint.

The cutting edges dull over time, especially if used on harder materials than intended. Stainless wire, steel cable, and hardened lockwire will accelerate cutting edge wear significantly. If you need to cut harder materials regularly, use a dedicated side cutter or cable cutter rated for the material.

Wipe the jaws with a clean cloth after use on oily or contaminated materials. Residual oil on the jaw teeth reduces grip on the next use. In HVAC work where compressor oil and refrigerant are present, pliers pick up oil constantly. A quick wipe keeps the grip functional.

Check the insulation condition at least monthly if the plier is used near live equipment. Any sign of damage to the insulation sleeve buy a replacement immediately.
