How Compressor Oil Keeps Refrigeration Systems Running Smoothly in KSA
The compressor in any AC or refrigeration system has moving parts. Pistons, scroll plates, vanes, bearings, valves. All of these need lubrication or they wear out fast. But unlike a car engine, where the oil sits in a sump and circulates through the engine, refrigeration compressor oil mixes with the refrigerant gas. Small amounts of oil leave the compressor, travel through the entire refrigerant circuit, and return.
That changes everything about how the oil has to behave. It needs to lubricate the compressor under high pressure and temperature. It needs to flow back to the compressor with the returning refrigerant rather than pooling somewhere in the system. It needs to stay miscible with the refrigerant at low evaporator temperatures. And it needs to insulate the motor windings inside hermetic compressors, which means high dielectric strength.
3GS is the workhorse refrigeration oil that meets these requirements. It’s been the AC and refrigeration industry standard for over 50 years for systems running CFC and HCFC refrigerants. At Cool.sa we stock it because plenty of refrigeration equipment in Saudi Arabia still runs R22 (and some legacy systems still run R12 and R502), and 3GS is the right oil for those compressors.
What Makes ISO VG 32 the Best Choice for AC and Refrigeration?
The ISO VG 32 viscosity grade (150 SUS) is the standard for medium and high temperature refrigeration applications. That covers the majority of AC and commercial refrigeration work. R22 air conditioning systems. Walk in cooler compressors. Beverage cooling. Automotive AC retrofits running R12 alternatives. Light commercial refrigeration.
For low temperature systems running below minus 30°C (typical of supermarket freezer compressors and industrial blast freezers), the heavier 4GS (ISO VG 68) is sometimes specified instead. For very large slow speed industrial compressors, the 5GS (ISO VG 100) gets used. Always check the compressor manufacturer’s specification before substituting. Mixing viscosity grades or using the wrong one causes lubrication problems that show up as compressor failure weeks or months later.
Why Mineral Oil Works for HCFC and CFC Refrigerants but Not HFC
3GS is specifically a mineral oil. It works with R22, R12, R502, R11, R13, R114, and similar CFC and HCFC refrigerants. It also works with natural refrigerants like ammonia (R717), propane (R290), and isobutane (R600a) in compatible systems.
3GS does not work with the HFC refrigerants used in modern AC equipment. R410A, R134a, R404A, R407C, and R32 systems require POE (polyolester) oil, not mineral oil. The chemistries are not interchangeable. Using mineral oil in an HFC system causes oil to separate from the refrigerant in the evaporator and not return to the compressor, which starves the bearings of lubrication and destroys the compressor.
For modern HFC systems (which is most new AC equipment installed in KSA after about 2010), POE oil is the correct choice. We stock POE oils alongside 3GS at Cool.sa.
How to Avoid Common Mistakes When Using 3GS Refrigeration Oil
Refrigeration oil absorbs moisture from air rapidly. Open containers should not be left exposed to ambient air. Once you’ve drawn the amount you need, reseal the container immediately. Moisture contamination in refrigeration oil causes acid formation in the system, which accelerates compressor wear and eventually causes electrical failures in hermetic motors.
Mixing oil grades is a common mistake. Don’t mix 3GS with 4GS or 5GS in the same system. Don’t mix mineral oil (3GS) with POE oil. If the system originally took 3GS and someone has put POE in by mistake, the system needs proper flushing before the correct oil is reinstalled.
Storage matters. Sealed containers in cool dry conditions, away from sunlight and moisture. Properly stored, refrigeration oil has a shelf life of around 3 to 5 years. Check the date and inspect for cloudiness or contamination before use.

FAQ
1. Can I use 3GS in my R410A air conditioner?
No. R410A systems require POE (polyolester) oil, not mineral oil. Using 3GS in an R410A system will cause compressor failure as the oil won’t return properly through the system. We stock POE oils for HFC systems.
2. What’s the difference between 3GS, 4GS, and 5GS?
The number refers to the viscosity grade. 3GS is ISO VG 32 (150 SUS), the standard for most AC and medium temperature refrigeration. 4GS is ISO VG 68 (300 SUS), heavier oil for low temperature systems. 5GS is ISO VG 100, very heavy for large slow speed industrial compressors. Always match the viscosity to the compressor specification.
3. Is 3GS the same as Suniso 3GS?
Suniso 3GS is one of the original brand names for ISO VG 32 naphthenic refrigeration oil. Several manufacturers produce equivalent 3GS specification oils. Always check that the oil meets the compressor manufacturer’s requirements regardless of brand.
4. Can 3GS be used with R22 systems?
Yes. R22 is an HCFC and 3GS is the standard mineral oil for R22 compressors. Most R22 air conditioning and refrigeration systems originally specified 3GS or equivalent.
5. How do I know if my system uses 3GS or POE oil?
Check the compressor nameplate or the system documentation. As a general guide: HFC refrigerants (R410A, R134a, R404A, R407C, R32) use POE oil. HCFC and CFC refrigerants (R22, R12, R502) use mineral oil like 3GS.
