Best Practices for Installing and Tightening Bolted HVAC Connections 

Thread engagement before tightening: run the bolt down by hand first. If it binds before full thread engagement, the threads may be damaged, mismatched pitch, or the hole is misaligned. Never force a binding bolt with a wrench, you’ll cross-thread the nut or strip the tapped hole. Back it out and investigate.

Washer use: always fit a flat washer under the bolt head and under the nut on HVAC equipment connections. Washers distribute clamp load across a larger surface area, which prevents bolt heads from pulling into softer materials (aluminum motor feet, thin sheet steel brackets) under torque. A bolt tightened without a washer into an aluminum motor foot will eventually pull the bolt head through the foot under vibration.

Thread locking compound: on vibrating equipment fan motors, compressors, pumps, apply a thread locking compound (medium strength, removable) to the bolt thread before assembly. Vibration loosens fasteners over time. Thread locking compound prevents this without making the bolt impossible to remove at the next service visit. Don’t use permanent-grade compound on maintenance fasteners.

Tightening sequence on multi-bolt flanges: tighten in a cross pattern, not in a circle. Circular tightening closes one side of the flange before the other, creating uneven clamp load and potential flange distortion on aluminum or cast iron components.

Bolted Joint Maintenance and Inspection Guidelines

Torque verification: on vibrating equipment, check critical bolted connections at the first 250 to 500 hours of operation after installation, then annually. New equipment bedds in and fasteners can work loose during the first few months. A motorized fan frame with loose mounting bolts will cause measurable increases in vibration, if you’re doing vibration monitoring, a sudden increase in vibration trend is often a loose fastener.

Corrosion inspection: check bolt heads and exposed thread for surface rust annually on inland sites, every 6 months on coastal sites. Surface rust on a zinc-plated bolt is cosmetic and not structural. Deep rust into the bolt thread or shank means the corrosion protection has failed and the bolt should be replaced before it seizes in the nut.

Seized fasteners: A bolt that can’t be turned out is a maintenance problem on any future service visit. Apply penetrating oil to seized bolts and allow 30 minutes soak time before attempting to turn. Don’t apply heat to galvanized bolts, the zinc coating releases zinc oxide fumes when heated, which is a respiratory hazard.
